- Robert De Niro's grandson Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez died on July 2, 2023.

- The 19-year-old died of an accidental drug overdose.

- Five men have been arrested in connection with the death.

Two years after the death of Robert De Niro's grandson, Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, several arrests have been made in connection with his accidental drug overdose, the Drug Enforcement Administration confirmed in a press conference on Thursday.

DEA Special Agent in Charge Frank A. Tarentino III and United States Attorney Jay Clayton of the Southern District of New York announced that five men have been charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances resulting in the accidental drug overdose of Leandro, the only child of Robert's oldest daughter, Drena De Niro, as well as the death of several others.

Three 19-year-olds, including Leandro, died of overdoses in a three-month span during the summer of 2023. Each case involved fentanyl-laced pills.**

The arrests come two years after Sofia H. Marks was arrested in connection with Leandro's death. PEOPLE reported that the then 20-year-old was charged with one count of distributing and possessing with intent to distribute fentanyl and alprazolam, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and two counts of distributing and possessing with intent to distribute fentanyl, each of which also carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Plea information for Marks was not immediately available.

Leandro was found dead in Manhattan on July 2, 2023. His death was ruled an accident, with the New York City medical examiner's office saying his death was attributed to the "toxic effects of fentanyl, bromazolam, alprazolam, 7-aminoclonazepam, ketamine, and cocaine."

Drena initially shared the news of her son's death on social media. "My beautiful sweet angel," she wrote at the time. "I have loved you beyond words or description from the moment I felt you in my belly. You have been my joy my heart and all that was ever pure and real in my life."

Drena continued, "I wish I was with you right now. I wish I was with you. I don't know how to live without you but I'll try to go on and spread the love and light that you so made me feel in getting to be your mama. You were so deeply loved and appreciated and I wish that love alone could have saved you."

She also tagged Carlos "Mare" Rodriguez, the father of Leandro, in her post. "I'm so sorry my baby," she concluded. "I'm so sorry @carlosmare. Rest in Peace and Eternal Paradise my darling boy."**

Last year, the *Killers of the Flower Moon* star reflected on Leandro's death in an interview with PEOPLE. "It's just a shock," he told the outlet. "[I] never thought it would happen."**

He added, "And I just then started thinking about all the things I could have, should have done maybe with him. I don't know if that would've made a difference. And so that's always playing through my mind."

Dave Franco doesn't see himself as a nepo-brother.

The *Now You See Me* star discussed the impact — or lack thereof — of his brother, James Franco, as he was finding his footing in Hollywood.

"No one was going to hire me just because I was James Franco's little brother," Franco told *Bustle*. "If I sucked, I would've disappeared very quickly."

Franco also said that his older brother remains supportive of his career. "At this point, I think he's excited just to see me trying new things and to see me grow," he reflected.

The *Neighbors* actor said that he doesn't mind being a footnote in another famous family member's legacy, though. "If the downside of working with my wife is that people are saying, 'Oh, that's just Alison Brie's husband,' that's fine," Franco said. "It's worth it."

Franco has seldom mentioned his older brother publicly since the *Spider-Man* star was accused of sexual misconduct in a 2019 lawsuit from two former students from his film and acting school. The lawsuit was eventually settled in 2021, and the elder Franco has remained largely inactive in Hollywood projects since the accusations surfaced, though he has participated in a number of European projects.

In 2012, Dave Franco told ** that his association with his brother added pressure to excel during his early career. "People expect me to be this great actor," he said at the time. "When I first came here from Palo Alto to be an actor, I was just like any other kid. I didn't know what the hell I was doing. But because of my last name, people paid more attention to me. They expected more from me. They assumed I would succeed in this crazy business."

Dave Franco has become a successful star in his own right, but it's worth noting that his career has overlapped with his brother's on numerous occasions.

After making his screen debut on the WB drama *7th Heaven* in 2006, Dave's first film role came in 2007's *Superbad*, which was written by and costarred his brother's frequent collaborator Seth Rogen (and was produced by Judd Apatow, who gave the elder Franco his big break on *Freaks and Geeks*).

In 2008, Dave Franco had a small part in the biopic *Milk*, which featured James Franco in a prominent supporting role. The *Regretting You* actor also played a younger version of his brother's main character in his James' 2011 directorial effort *The Broken Tower*.

After Dave reteamed with Rogen in two *Neighbors* films, the Francos reunited for their most prominent collaboration, 2017's *The Disaster Artist*. That film, which was directed and produced by James, saw the elder Franco play *The Room* star Tommy Wiseau, while Dave portrayed Tommy's collaborator Greg Sestero.

The brothers' last collaboration came in 2019 with James' directorial film *Zeroville*, which both brothers starred in alongside Megan Fox, Joey King, and Rogen.

Dave Franco is in the midst of one of the busiest years of his career. He can be seen alongside Allison Williams and Mckenna Grace in the romantic drama *Regretting You*, which is currently playing in theaters. He also co-headlined the indie horror film *Together* with Brie, and also stars in the magic-crime threequel *Now You See Me: Now You Don't*, which hits theaters on Nov. 14. Franco also reunited with Rogen earlier this year when he played a version of himself on *The Studio*, earning his first Emmy nomination for his over-the-top turn in the Hollywood satire series.

Dean Lewis has issued a public apology

Australian singer Dean Lewis has apologized, following allegations from several women that he caused them hurt or discomfort with the way he treated them.

"In the past few days, social media has made public a decade-plus of private conversations with a number of women, all of adult age," Lewis wrote on social media. "I don't fault these individuals for having hard feelings, and I don't want anyone defending me. I was breathtakingly dumb texting and flirting in the manner I have over many years. I should have been more sensitive that not everyone might look at our interactions the way I often did."

Lewis, who said that not all that's out there about him is accurate, emphasized that all the parties involved in the encounters he spoke of were consenting adults.

"The individuals leading the campaign against me have repeatedly acknowledged this, and I'm hurt by any suggestion that I've done things that have crossed into illegality," he wrote. "At the same time, I realise I've made an incredible mess, people are genuinely hurt, and I need to make changes."

Lewis, 38, explained that, "From the bottom of my heart, I want to sincerely apologise to those I've hurt," including not only the women who've come forward with accusations against him, but also those who hadn't, and for the fans and family members he'd left "gravely disappointed."

The changes he cited include "enrolling myself into intense therapy to make better choices and dramatically shift my approach to dating, relationships, and showing greater care to the women in my life." He also plans to have "a whole new set of rules so there's never confusion or questions about my intent when I'm engaging with fans or responding to messages in the future."

Lewis noted that fame had left him lonely, and he'd sought connection, but now he's voluntarily cutting himself off from others for a while.

"I know it's too much to ask for grace and forgiveness at this moment, but in time I hope to re-earn the trust of those I've hurt, and do better by those I've disappointed," Lewis wrote. "I'm going to look after myself for a little bit while I get my head and life in order."

Lewis has had songs featured on popular TV shows such as *Riverdale* (his 2016 debut single "Waves"), *Suits*, and *Grey's Anatomy*. He's released three albums and been nominated for multiple international awards.**

Judd Apatow is sharing some of the expletive-ridden notes that his eldest daughter, Maude, would leave him and his wife, Leslie Mann, in her younger years. **

The *This Is 40* and *Knocked Up *director* *has revealed that Maude used to sprinkle nasty letters around their home for him and Mann whenever she was angry with them. **

"When we would get into a fight or she was mad at us, one way she dealt with not just yelling at us is she would write mean things on a notepad and just leave them around the house," Apatow explained on Wednesday's episode of *Late Night With Seth Meyers.*

Judd Apatow on Late Night with Seth Meyers

Maude Apatow's curse-filled notes to her mom and dad.

To prove Apatow's point, host Seth Meyers held up one of Maude's notes, which featured a doodle of three people with what appears to be the words "f--- you, bitch-headed bitches" scrawled above them. One of the individuals can be seen crying "whaa" in response. **

Apatow quickly explained the drawing. "Me, Leslie, and I think that's [Maude's younger sister] Iris going, 'Whaa,'" he said, pointing at the three people in the note. "She's angry at a baby."**

And yet, Meyers noted, that curse-filled letter was only the tip of the iceberg. "You would think this is really bad," he prefaced, "and by the way, I would never be happy if my kids called me [bleep]-headed bitches… This is weirdly worse when she uses your full name."

The host then showcased another note, which featured a much more direct insult: "F--- you, Judd Apatow."

Meyers added, "She doesn't even want to risk that you think it might be a different Judd."**

But that wasn't even the funniest part of the message, according to Apatow.

"You're holding it the wrong way. That's an executioner who just cut my head off," he said, pointing to a person with what appeared to be a scythe floating above them and a nearby head. **

"I was trying to do her a solid," Meyers said as he reoriented the note. "This is like, 'Oh dear.'"**

After taking a second look, Apatow amended his remarks. "Oh, wait! I just realized, no, no, I got it wrong. That's not the executioner — that's *me* without a head."**

Meyers saw Maude's vision a second later. "Oh yeah, you're right," he agreed.

As it turns out, Apatow has a propensity for sending spicy notes, too. Later in the interview, he recalled his experience writing an executive who had canceled his critically acclaimed series *Undeclared* and attaching the letter to a framed picture of the show landing on **'s year-end best-of list. **

"The person that canceled it had previously, years before, canceled another show that I worked on, which was *The Ben Stiller Show*," he said. "We were told, like, 'Come back and we won't cancel you so fast,' and then I came back and they canceled us really fast."**

Meyers then read Apatow's scathing message to the executive aloud for the audience. "I don't know if you just f---ed me in the ass again, or you just never took it out in 1992."**

Reacting to the note, Apatow simply said, "You know, when you're a kid, you're very passionate."**

- *The Asset* follows a Danish police recruit who cozies up to a drug lord's girlfriend to gather intel on his criminal organization.

- Multiple cliffhangers leave the door open for a second season.

- The six-part thriller is now streaming on Netflix.

*The Asset,* a Danish thriller series that hit Netflix on Oct. 27, follows Tea Lind (Clara Dessau), a struggling police cadet with one last chance to prove herself worthy of joining the force.

She's tasked with a dangerous mission for Denmark's Security and Intelligence Service (PET) that involves going undercover to get close to Ashley (Maria Cordsen), the glamorous gal pal of a drug lord, Miran (Afshin Firouzi).

But the deeper Tea delves into Ashley's life, the more personal the assignment becomes. And when it becomes clear that Ashley and her daughter are in real danger, Tea has to decide whether to follow orders or risk everything to save them.

The twists come fast and furious on this six-part series, which culminates in a surprising cliffhanger, so read on as * *breaks down the ending of *The Asset*.

What is *The Asset *about?

Clara Dessau as Tea, Dan Boie Kratfeldt as Niko, and Afshin Firouzi as Miran in 'The Asset' season 1

Clara Dessau as Tea, Dan Boie Kratfeldt as Niko, and Afshin Firouzi as Miran in 'The Asset' season 1.

*The Asset* wastes no time dropping viewers into its dangerous underworld.

Tea is approached by PET and tasked with infiltrating the criminal empire of Miran, a ruthless criminal posing as a businessman. To get close to him, Tea must befriend his girlfriend, Ashley, who will do anything to protect Sofia (Lara Ly Melic Skovgaard), the daughter she shares with Miran.

What begins as a straightforward assignment quickly turns into something more personal. The closer Tea gets to Ashley, the harder it becomes to separate her job from her empathy.

While PET insists on gathering evidence at any cost, Tea is the one paying the price. They force her to stay even as her cover story starts to collapse. It comes to a head when Miran's brother, Bambi (Arian Kashef), is murdered. Paranoia and suspicion follows, and Tea begins fearing for her life.

What happens to Sofia?

Danger rears its head in the season finale, "What Was Your Name Again?." In the aftermath of Sofia being taken away from Ashley and Miran (a move orchestrated by PET), Tea breaks cover and tells Ashley that she's been working as an undercover agent.

Ashley is completely betrayed, having lost both her daughter and a friend. Still, she realizes the severe danger she's in, so she agrees to work with PET and tell them everything about Miran's operation.

During an interrogation, Ashley admits she's helped Miran run drug shipments at least a dozen times. At home, she elicits a confession from Miran as PET listens in. He tells her he killed the man responsible for Bambi's death, but swears he's finished with his criminal life.

That night, Ashley calls Tea to say she can't go through with the plan. She insists that Miran is a "good man" who "doesn't deserve this." Tea, knowing how deep Miran's criminal activities go, tells Ashley it's the only way she can get Sofia back safely.

Does Miran get caught?

Afshin Firouzi as Miran in 'The Asset' season 1

Yes, but not without peril. Miran grabs Ashley's phone as she's talking to Tea, and Ashley quickly admits to making a deal with PET. She reveals to Miran that PET has been spying on them this whole time through Tea, and he is speechless.

Ashley repeatedly apologizes, but it does nothing to calm down Miran. Soon after, the police raid their home. Ashley is taken into custody, but Miran manages to escape.

He manages to track down Tea, threatening to kill her. Tea begs him to surrender, warning him that PET plans to imprison both he and Ashley, which will leave Sofia without either parent. Tea urges him to turn himself in and clear Ashley's name. Eventually, he does.

While in custody, Miran tells authorities that he kept Ashley as his prisoner and forced her to work for him. As a result, Ashley is released and reunited with Sofia.

One month later, Ashley and Sofia have moved into a new apartment and are ready to start the next chapter of their lives. Tea even visits them, but Ashley scolds the agent for upending their lives and taking away Miran and the life he provided for their family.

Later, while playing with Sofia, Ashley discovers one of her daughter's toys has a hidden key. It leads her to a storage unit filled with Miran's money and drugs. The episode ends before we can see what Ashley does next. Will she abscond with the money — or take up Miran's operation herself?

What happens at the end of The Asset?

Due to the mission's success, PET offers Tea a permanent place with the agency, but she turns it down. Tea then meets with her former PET contact, Yasin (Soheil Bavi), who tries to convince her to accept the job.

As they drive off, the pair's conversation is cut short when two gunmen on a motorcycle open fire on them. Tea gets shot, but Yasin gets her to a hospital and she survives.

When Tea wakes up, she learns from Yasin and PET director Folke (Nicolas Bro) that the attackers are still in the wind. The episode ends there, leaving fans in the dark about what's next and if Tea plans on hunting down the mysterious assassins.

The first responders on *9-1-1* are no strangers to grief and loss, but this week's episode ended with a real-life tribute.

Season 9, episode 4 of the ABC first-responder drama — featuring Athena (Angela Bassett) and Hen (Aisha Hinds) fighting to get back to Earth after their ill-fated trip to space — concluded with a tribute card simply reading "For Dad."

** can confirm the dedication was in honor of Charles Minear Sr., the father of *9-1-1* co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer Tim Minear.

Minear also served as co-creator and a showrunner on spinoff *9-1-1: Lone Star* and is co-creator of the latest expansion of the *9-1-1* universe, *9-1-1: Nashville*.

This will sadly not be the only tribute at the end of a *9-1-1* episode this week. EW recently reported that *9-1-1: Nashville* will acknowledge the Oct. 19 death of rising star Isabelle Tate, who appeared on the premiere of the new series.

A representative for Tate revealed the 23-year-old actress died from a rare form of a neurological disorder, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, which is a group of "inherited conditions that cause nerve damage," mainly to the arms and legs, according to the Mayo Clinic.

"Isabelle 'Izzy' Tate had a rare form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease," said Kim McCray, founder of Tate's The McCray Agency. She added that Tate "passed away peacefully" and that "the family requests privacy as they deal with this sudden and shocking loss."

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association in Tate's name.

Tate's tribute will air at the end of *9-1-1: Nashville* season 1, episode 4, which concludes tonight at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.

What are the Nebraska Blackshirts? Explaining Huskers' defense nickname

This weekend, the normally red-clad confines of Nebraska's Memorial Stadium will be covered in black.

The Cornhuskers' game against USC on Saturday, Nov. 1 is a designated "blackout" game, with coach Matt Rhule's team set to wear black jerseys on a field with black end zones and in front of tens of thousands of fans decked out in black clothing.

Blackouts are nothing particularly new in college or professional sports, with the concept gaining popularity in the 2000s, even for teams that don't have black as one of their primary colors.

For Nebraska, the hue has a different and cherished meaning.

The "Blackshirts," a reference to the Huskers' defense, is a central part of the Nebraska football lore, something that helped the Huskers win five national championships and become one of the most storied programs in college football history.

Here's a closer look at the history of the Blackshirts:

Nebraska Blackshirts

Under coaches Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne, Nebraska football became a powerhouse, a program that regularly competed for championships.

From 1970 through 1997, the Huskers won five national titles and 16 conference championships while racking up 17 seasons with at least 10 wins and competing in bowls that are now a part of the New Year's Six lineup 24 times.

One of the many forces behind that decorated run was a ferocious defense. It was a unit that not only kept opponents out of the end zone and off the scoreboard, but one that had a mythology develop around it.

After the 1963 season, the NCAA ended the one-platoon system, meaning that teams had unlimited substitutions and were able to create dedicated offensive, defensive and special teams units. Though Devaney played most of his starters on both offense and defense in Nebraska's 1964 season opener, a 56-0 victory against South Dakota, he announced in the days leading up to a Sept. 26 game at Minnesota that he would be using separate offensive and defensive units.

The move presented an organizational challenge, with the coaches needing a way to distinguish between offensive and defensive players during practice that week. As the story goes, Huskers assistant Mike Corgan went to a local sporting goods store to look for pullovers for players to wear in practice. The frugal Corgan noticed an abundance of black jerseys, which he purchased for the Nebraska defense.

"I told Mike the only reason they had black ones was because they didn't sell," Nebraska defensive line coach George Kelly once said.

Defensive players weren't guaranteed to wear a black pullover. According to Kelly, Huskers defenders had previously worn gray pullovers, but when the switch to offensive and defensive units was made, black pullovers were given only to starters, something that was used as a motivational tactic.

The idea of the "Black Shirt" quickly caught on in the local media, with newspapers in Lincoln and Omaha making reference to the shirts in stories. It didn't hurt that those Nebraska defenses in the early days of the black pullovers were particularly stout. In that fateful 1964 season, the Huskers had the nation's No. 2 total defense. Three years later, in 1967, they were No. 1.

Even as coaches and players changed, the "Blackshirt" moniker (which eventually became a single word) persisted.

Facets of it were altered. Players' numbers and names were added to the jerseys. They were no longer handed out before practice and collected afterward. During Osborne's legendary 25-year run as coach, members of the top defensive unit during preseason training camp would receive Blackshirts the week before the team's first game.

Over time, Blackshirts described not only the Nebraska starters, but the Huskers' entire defense — and even came to define the entire program itself.
