Donnie Wahlberg revealed that he leaned on his wife, Jenny McCarthy, when deciding if he wanted to star on the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue.
"I remember when Jenny got the call for The Masked Singer, she was like, 'I don't know. Is this going to work?' and I was like, 'That's going to be huge!'" Wahlberg, 56, told Country Living in an interview published on Thursday, October 30. "She was like, 'Really?' and I said, 'Yes,' and she re-looked at it."
Meanwhile, he revealed that McCarthy, 53, also encouraged him ahead of his latest television project. "That's how we are," he said. "Boston Blue came along and she said, 'You must do this.' I was like, 'I know, but Blue Bloods … I could keep [trying to save] this.' She said, 'You have to give it a try.' She's incredibly supportive."
Wahlberg and McCarthy have proven to be couple goals ever since they got married in 2014. In addition to building a life together, they also built a blended family with McCarthy's son Evan, 23, and Wahlberg's sons Xavier, 32, and Elijah, 24.
"I don't know if I can answer how she's supported it as much as I can answer how much – which is a million, billion percent," he continued of his wife. "In every way, she's a confidant, a cheerleader, a supporter. The way she describes it is that she will hold my kite strings and let me fly."
Wahlberg added, "And there are times when I'm going to hold her kite strings and let her fly and when she comes down for landing, I'm right there as her support on the ground. That's just what we do for each other. And she's really smart. She's been in this industry for a long time herself, so she's great to bounce ideas off and sound things out with."
He went on to note that they have had a "really fun" journey together. "There's the professional side and what it looks like to the outside world, but there's also the inside version, which is not that different," Wahlberg said. "We have a lot of fun – but we work for it. The most work we put into anything is our relationship and our family."
Wahlberg previously starred on Blue Bloods as Detective Danny Reagan from 2010 until 2024. After the show concluded its 14th season, most of the stars left the CBS franchise. However, Wahlberg got the chance to reprise his role in the spinoff Boston Blue. The show follows Danny leaving his job as a detective with the NYPD and relocating to the Boston Police Department after a case involving his youngest son, Sean, takes place.
Since Boston Blue films in Toronto, the couple doesn't get to see each other as much as they like. However, he revealed that McCarthy always makes sure that he's prioritizing his mental health when he gets a break.
"Jenny's like, 'I'm coming to see you,' and I'm like, 'Alright, what do you want to do?' and she says, 'Bed rot.' I'm like, 'What does that mean?' and she goes, 'You're not getting out of bed. We're gonna lay there and you're gonna recuperate.' There's been a lot of bed rot days," he said.
