Pakistan pushing for Round 2 of

A senior Pakistani government official confirmed to CBS News that Islamabad has intensified diplomatic efforts to bring Tehran and Washington back to the negotiating table over theIran war.

CBS News

Despite the lack of a breakthrough in the historic face-to-face round oftalks over the weekend, Pakistani authorities said they remain cautiously optimistic about the prospects for continued engagement between both sides.

Notably, there appears to be an element of rebranding underway, with officials now increasingly referring to the "Islamabad Talks" as the "Islamabad Process," a shift that suggests an effort to frame the engagement as an ongoing diplomatic track rather than a one-off meeting.

The top-level source also said Monday thatPakistanis in active contact with both Washington and Tehran, urging them to resume dialogue at the earliest opportunity. The primary objective is to reach a workable understanding before thecurrent ceasefire— set to expire around April 22 — ends in order to prevent a return to all-out-war. Efforts are now underway to facilitate a second round of talks within this narrow window.

According to the source, these diplomatic initiatives are being pursued under the direct instructions of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. Both played a key role in bringing the two sides together, were present at varying times throughout the 21 hours of inconclusive talks, and have been working intensely to move the process forward.

CBS News has been told Pakistan is now waiting for responses from both the U.S. and Iran.On Monday, Qatar's foreign minister told his Iranian counterpart that Iran and the U.S. should engage positively with mediation efforts, warning that maritime routes must not be used as "bargaining tools."Qatari Foreign Minister and Premier Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani "also emphasised the need to open maritime routes, guarantee freedom of navigation, and refrain from using them as a tool for pressure or bargaining," according to the foreign ministry'sXaccount.

A new global player?

Pakistan, a nuclear power with a population of 250 million, has been trying to rebrand itself to attract investment and stabilize its crippled economy.

Successfully mediating such peace talks would be a diplomatic coup and go some way toward helping the nation's desire to be seen as a global player.

If the current ceasefire holds, Pakistan may have some wiggle room as it tries to bring the Americans and Iranians back around the table.

But with U.S. threats to blockade theStrait of Hormuz, and Iranian promises to retaliate, officials might be counting the time they have at their disposal in hours, rather than days.

What to Know About the Latest Allegations of Sexual Misconduct Against Eric Swalwell

Eric Swalwellmay have resigned from Congress, but the scandal thatforced him to vacate his House seatand end his bid forCalifornia governorcontinues to grow.

On Tuesday, former ‌model and fashion software company owner Lonna Drewesclaimed to reportersin a news conference that Swalwell raped her in a hotel in 2018, adding to others’ previous allegations of sexual misconduct by the Democratic politician.

“He raped me and he choked me,” Drewes said. She added that she stands with the other women who spoke out and that she will report the incident to law enforcement.

After Drewes went public, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, in astatementto themedia, said its Special Victims Bureau opened an investigation into a woman allegedly being sexually assaulted by Swalwell in July 2018 in West Hollywood.

“Once the investigation is completed the investigators will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration,” the Department statement read.

Drewes’ allegations against Swalwell echo those from multiple women, including a case first reported by theSan Francisco Chronicle, which involved an unnamed former staffer who accused him of sexual assault.CNNalso reported on the case, as well as three other women who described separate instances of Swalwell’s alleged misconduct. TIME has not independently verified the allegations.

Amid the controversy, Swalwell has acknowledged some past “mistakes in judgment,” but denied the allegations of misconduct. His camp vowed to legally challenge the accusations and has sent cease-and-desist letters to some of his accusers.

Sara Azari, representing Swalwell legally, said in a Tuesday statementthat the “deeply offensive” accusations are a “calculated and transparent political hit job designed to destroy the reputation” of the Democratic politician, and she questioned the allegations’ timing, nature, and what she claimed to be a “coordinated rollout.”

Swalwell’s resignation from the House marks a stunning and rapid fall from his status less than a week ago, when he was among the top contenders in the race to succeed California Gov. Gavin Newsom. The state is set to have primaries in June, but the allegations have eroded support for his bid from fellow Democrats.

Newsom on Tuesdayannounceda special election to fill Swalwell’s vacated seat for the state’s 14th congressional district on Aug. 18.

‘I thought I died’

In the press briefing, Drewes claimed that she had contact with Swalwell three times. She said he offered Silicon Valley connections for her firm and had invited her to two public events. She added that at the time, the two talked politics as she was considering running for the Beverly Hills City Council.

On the third encounter, Drewes claimed Swalwell spiked her glass of wine. Before a political event, Swalwell had allegedly invited her to his hotel room to retrieve documents, but the drink had by then left her “incapacitated.”

“I couldn’t move my arms or my body,” Drewes said. While Swalwell allegedly choked her, she claimed she lost consciousness. “I thought I died.”

Drewes asserted that she did not consent and would not have consented to sexual activity with Swalwell and that the incident had impacted her mental health severely. She added that the delay in taking action was driven by “fear of his political power, his background as an attorney, and his family law enforcement ties.”

How Swalwell’s resignation ‘vindicated’ victims

After Swalwell’s resignation, Ally Sammarco, one of the accusers CNN spoke to for its report, toldCBS Newsthat she feels “vindicated” with the development. “He was pushed into a corner, essentially, because they were planning to expel him,” Sammarco said of his resignation, “so I think he did that to save face a little.”

CNN andCBS Newshave also spoken to another accuser, Annika Albrecht, who claimed to have met Swalwell in Washington D.C. while in college. Albrecht told CBS News that Swalwell offered to mentor her. She said Swalwell asked the students to create a group chat, and soon added her on Snapchat.

Albrecht’s initial exchanges with Swalwell were about politics, but they then turned flirtatious. At one point, Swalwell “invited” her to a hotel to meet, to which she stopped responding to him on Snapchat.

“It was very clear what the connotation was,” she told CBS News. “What I keep thinking back to is how lucky I am that I didn’t go to that hotel.”

Albrecht, said of Swalwell’s resignation, “For me, justice won’t be until he can’t ever harm a woman ever again, and he has faced the consequences for the women that he has harmed.”

Swalwell resigned amid threats of expulsion against him andRep. Tony Gonzales (R, Texas), who was dogged by a separate controversy—an affair with his former staffer who later died by suicide. Gonzales also resigned Tuesday.

Many of Swalwell’s political peers have since distanced themselves. Sen. Ruben Gallego (D, Ariz.), who chaired Swalwell’s brief 2020 presidential campaign, acknowledged to reporters Tuesdayhis friendship with the California politician but that he “lied to all of us.” Gallego also denied having any knowledge of Swalwell’s predatory behavior, sexual assault, or harassment, though he said that he asked Swalwell about related rumors.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, Calif.), one of the Democratic Party’s most influential leaders, called Swalwell’sresignationmove a “smart decision,” and she asserted that she knew nothing of the accusations before the reports came out. Pelosi, when she was Speaker, hadelevated Swalwell to coveted House positions, anddefended him in a previous, unrelated issue.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D, N.Y.)told reportersthat Congress was at a “resetting point” after Swalwell’s and Gonzales’ resignations, and that the incident has shown that the U.S. has become “acclimated” to similar incidents of sexual abuse and harassment from people in power.

“I don’t think our work is done,” she said. “I think that a lot of the underlying structures that silence victims of sexual harassment and abuse still exist.”

  • The dark comedy-crime series premiered on Netflix on April 9

  • Dan, who co-created the show with Rachel Sennott, stars as a pastor who, along with his sister, becomes accidentally drawn into an organized crime ring after she steals a diamond necklace from a local store

Dan Levysays his childhood dynamic with sisterSarah Levypartly inspired his new show,Big Mistakes.

While stepping out to the premiere of the Netflix comedy-crime series in New York City on April 6, theSchitt's Creekalum, 42, spoke to PEOPLE exclusively about which of his family members he thinks comes across most in the show.

"I would probably say the early days of me and my sister," he said of Sarah, 39. "We're in a far better place now that we're older and wiser. But drawing on … anyone who has a sibling, I think, will recognize themselves in the show."

"And it was really about authenticating the experience of that sibling dynamic and just exacerbating all of the bickering in the light of, like, intense criminal activity," he continued. "So my hope is that anyone who comes from a yelling family, anyone who has a sibling, and anyone who's curious about what it is to have a sibling, or to come from a yelling family, will find a place in this show."

Dan co-created the series — which premiered on the streaming platform on April 9 — alongsideRachel Sennott. The show centers on siblings Nicky (Dan), a pastor, and Morgan (Taylor Ortega), a public school teacher, whose lives take an unexpected turn when they end up drawn into a local crime syndicate after Morgan shoplifts a necklace from a pawn shop.

The cast also includesLaurie Metcalf, Boran Kuzum, Jack Innanen, Abby Quinn, Jacob Gutierrez, Mark Ivanir andElizabeth Perkins.

Reflecting on his return to TV following his six-season run onSchitt's Creek, Dan told PEOPLE, "When I leftSchitt's, I really wanted to make sure that the next thing I did in TV gave me that same sense of inspiration and passion and excitement and love and affection for the people I was working with, and it did."

He went on to rave about hisBig Mistakescolleagues, saying, "I love these people so much. I'm so proud of this cast and crew. People are working at, like, 110%. All I did was set the table for these people, and they ate."

He added: "So, this is just the cherry on top of a really, really special experience, and I hope we get to tell this story for seasons and seasons and seasons."

As theBig Mistakesstory relies on the actors creating a believable — albeit dysfunctional — family dynamic, the cast spent time rehearsing together on camera and bonding off-set, Dan previously told PEOPLE. That bonding included "serious" games of Boggle, complete withBig Mistakesscorecards.

"If you didn't believe the family, then you're not going to believe in the show," Dan explained in an interview ahead of the show's debut. "So it was really important that the cast know each other before the cameras started rolling, and we would play Boggle every opportunity we got, and we bonded through the love of games."

AtBig Mistakes' N.Y.C. premiere, Dan told PEOPLE that his family — including sister Sarah, dadEugene Levyand momDeborah Divine— have already seen the show and count themselves as fans.

"They're already quoting lines from it, and they're very excited to watch it again," he said. "So, that's all I could ask for."

Big Mistakesis now streaming on Netflix.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Suspected militants opened fire on a vehicle carryingpolice officers assigned to protect polio workersin northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, killing one of them and wounding four others before fleeing the scene, police said. Two attackers were killed when police returned fire.

APTOPIX Pakistan Polio

The shooting occurred in Hangu, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan, shortly after Pakistan launched its second nationwide anti-polio campaign of the year, according to local police official Mahmood Alam.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but suspicion is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban and local militant groups, which often carry out similar attacks in the region and elsewhere.Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistanremain the only countries where polio has not been eradicated, according to the World Health Organization.

First lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari urged families to ensure their children are vaccinated during the weeklong drive, which aims to reach more than 45 million children under 5 across all provinces and regions. She said the campaign will be conducted in coordination with Afghanistan, reflecting a shared commitment to interrupt cross-border transmission and close remaining gaps.

Aseefa is the daughter of President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who was killed in a 2007 gun and bomb attack by militants, and who had personally overseen initiatives aimed at eliminating polio during her tenure. In a statement, she said “Pakistan stands at a crucial moment in the fight against polio.” She said while the country is closer than ever to eradication, “the final stretch remains the most challenging.”

Highlighting recent gains, she said31 polio cases were reported nationwide in 2025, while only one case has so far been recorded so far this year, but warned against complacency.

While Pakistan primarily uses door-to-door vaccination teams to reach children at their homes, Afghanistan generally relies on fixed vaccination sites and health facilities, where parents are asked to bring their children for immunization.

In Kabul, Sharafat Zaman, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health, said the first national polio vaccination campaign of the year has begun in Afghanistan in coordination with international partners, aiming to vaccinate around 12.6 million children under the age of 5 across the country. He said the campaign has been delayed in some areas due to cold weather.

Zaman urged parents, religious scholars and community leaders to ensure maximum participation in the campaign, stressing that polio can only be prevented through vaccination.

Pakistan’s polio eradication program has been running anti-polio campaigns for years, though health workers and the police assigned to protect them are often targeted by militants who falsely claim the vaccination campaigns are a Western conspiracy to sterilize children.

Authorities havedeployed thousands of police officers to protect workersfollowing intelligence warnings of possible attacks. More than 200 polio workers and the police assigned to guard them have been killed in Pakistan since the 1990s, according to officials.

Afghan reported from Kabul. Riaz Khan and Rasool Dawar contributed to this story from Peshawar, Pakistan.

We never want to hear these 10 songs again: Do you agree?

There’s a unique kind of heartbreak in a great song ruined by relentless overexposure. Think of classics like “Jumping Jack Flash” or “Who Are You”—once vibrant and exciting, now grating after countless radio spins.

MediaFeed

10 Overplayed Songs

We bear some responsibility, of course. Radio stations respond to demand, and we, the listeners, created that demand. But at a certain point, blame becomes irrelevant. We just want the sonic assault to stop.

Here are 10 songs so overplayed, we’d rather risk a high-speed exit than endure another note.

1. ‘Hey Jude’ by the Beatles (1968)

If “Hey Jude” was just the “song” that stopped at the 3:09 mark, we probably would have fewer problems with it. Sadly, that obvious point at which they could have ended the song – literally on a high note – is immediately followed by a single chord progression and singalong non-lyrics that go on for four minutes, making the ending longer than the actual song. By the time they’re two minutes into the ending, you may wish for a two-minute coma to overtake you so you don’t have to hear the rest.

2. ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine’ by Guns N’ Roses (1987)

Guns N’ Roses achieved superstardom and chart success thanks to this ballad from their “Appetite for Destruction” album. It is impossible to overstate how often innocent ears were subjected to it daily during its heyday, and there was nowhere you could go to get away from it. It blasted from passing cars, and even people who didn’t like heavy metal or hard rock would play it if they got a few drinks in them. Luckily for this piece of music, much worse songs came along in the ensuing years, so it now seems brilliant in comparison.

3. ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ by Journey (1981)

We know we bring up this song a lot, but we would be shirking our journalistic duties if we did not include Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” on our list of overplayed songs. The song was already overplayed when it came out over 40 years ago, and to people of a certain age, seeing it resurface with a vengeance in the 2000s was akin to witnessing a long-dead, hated relative claw its way out of a grave to terrorize townsfolk and feast upon their warm flesh.

4. ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis (1995)

Maybe we’re old-fashioned, but we’ve always believed that if a song becomes a big radio hit played ad infinitum, it would be nice if the singer could sing. Sadly, when “Wonderwall” came out and became a massive hit, it was sung by Liam Gallagher, the reason we’re glad they invented autotune. His off-key nasal voice makes you sick of the song a lot faster than you usually would if it were sung by someone tolerable.

5. ‘Proud Mary’ by Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969)

If you want to pick overplayed songs by Creedence Clearwater Revival, there is no shortage of choices, and we could make an entire 20-item list of overplayed songs just by them alone. For this list, we’re going with “Proud Mary,” a massive seller that charted internationally. These factors may have led radio programmers to believe that 54 years later, we still yearn to hear it several times daily. We don’t. Do yourself a favor and check out the vastly superior version recorded by the late Tina Turner instead.

6. ‘Don’t Stop’ by Fleetwood Mac (1977)

Just like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fleetwood Mac has to its credit a seemingly bottomless supply of overplayed songs, making it a challenge to isolate just one for this list. We’re going with “Don’t Stop,” an inexcusably trite song full of “Me Decade” toxic positivity that suggests that tomorrow will miraculously be better than today, solely by virtue of it happening in the future. We will take the song’s advice and await a tomorrow in which we never have to hear this song again.

7. ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana (1991)

When the grunge genre hit, it was supposed to replace the outdated idealism of generations past and embrace a more world-weary view. In reality, it just became the next source of overplayed songs, none of which got more overplayed than this. Critics at the time said that the song expressed the feelings of the era’s teenagers, but when you look at the lyric sheet, it’s just a bunch of nonsensical rhyming words strung together haphazardly. Also, shouldn’t the band be #canceled for using a very un-PC description of a person of mixed race?

8. ‘Umbrella’ by Rihanna (ft. Jay-Z) (2007)

It pains us to include Rihanna on this list because she’s a gifted singer who’s produced a lot of really enjoyable music. She even wows Super Bowl audiences while pregnant! Having said that, how many times do you need to hear the last two syllables of the word “umbrella” before you need the men in white coats to come after you with butterfly nets? That’s a rhetorical question, of course, but the song was ruinously overplayed, and over 15 years later, we’re still in recovery.

9. ‘Love Shack’ by the B-52s (1989)

If the mere mention of this song’s title fills you with mortal terror, congratulations. That means you’ve been alive at some point since 1989 and have personally been on hand to see this throwaway novelty song turn into an instrument of torture. The B-52s had been turning out unique and entertaining music for most of the 1980s, so it’s a shame that their worst song (yes, it’s their worst song) became what they’re best known for. Luckily, they never overplayed “Rock Lobster,” so we can still hang on to that and remember what once was.

10. ‘Let It Go’ by Idina Menzel (2014)

If you are unable or unwilling to bear children, you might have escaped the 2010s without hearing Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go” on the regular. For the rest of us who had kids around the time the movie “Frozen” came out, this song was a permanent fixture in our daily lives, like humidity or termites. Children, it seems, like to hear the same song over and over again, and you’d better believe we heard this one all the time. At the same time, no one forced us to take our kids to see “Frozen” in the first place, so maybe this one is on us.
