Police say Patrick Lynch and his children Caroline and James died in a murder-suicide; the medical examiner’s office ruled Caroline and James’ deaths as homicides

The children’s mother said Patrick was depressed and was set to start therapy the following day

The children died from “multiple blunt force injuries,” the ME’s office said

The mother of two children who were killed by their father in a murder-suicide has spoken up about the circumstances leading to the tragic deaths.

Caroline Lynch, 6, and her brother James Lynch, 8, were found suffering injuries from an apparent fall outside a municipal building in Mt. Lebanon, Pa., on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Their father Patrick Lynch was also found with similar injuries. All three later died in what police are investigating as a murder-suicide, the Allegheny County Police Department. According to PennLive, Patrick threw the kids from a five-story parking garage.

After the killings, the children’s mother shared a post on Facebook claiming Patrick had been depressed after recently getting laid off.

In a screenshot of the post cited by the Daily Voice, WPXI and PennLive, Anna DeMase Lynch wrote Patrick “made the irreversible decision to kill our two children and himself,” adding he was “a wonderful dad.”

“He was laid off in August and shortly after became depressed,” she added in the post, also shared online by KDKA-AM radio host Marty Griffin.

Patrick’s Linkedin shows he was a data scientist working on machine learning and AI, and his last job ended in August.

Anna claimed in her Facebook post that she’d convinced Patrick to go to therapy, and he was scheduled for an appointment the following day.

“One day too late,” she wrote. “I never thought this is how our story would end.”

A GoFundMe has been set up for Anna as she grieves for Caroline and James, and prepares to lay them to rest.

The Mt. Lebanon community is also coming together to mourn the children, who the medical examiner’s office said died from “multiple blunt force injuries.”

“She was a ball of joy. She loved people,” Vicky Heffelfinger, who knew the Lynch family through their work at a swim school, told WTAE. “Every single time we saw her, she would wave to everyone. She would look at the other kids and just really was such a brave girl.”

The Williams Syndrome foundation, which worked with the family owing to Caroline’s diagnosis of the rare genetic disorder, issued a statement.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Anna Lynch, mother and wife, and to everyone affected by this devastating event,” the statement read. “We know this is painful news to share with our community.”

Anna had opened up about Caroline’s diagnosis in a 2024 post raising funds for the organization.
