John Goodman said he reached nearly 400 lbs. due to his diet after quitting drinking in 2007

The actor described prioritizing sobriety as a life-saving decision over his onscreen persona

After fracturing his hip last year, he now focuses on low-impact workouts and therapy

John Goodman says he was “eating alcoholically” after he quit drinking at age 55 — leading to him eventually weighing 400 lbs. before he decided to embark on a fitness journey.

The Roseanne alum, 74, told The New Yorker that before he quit drinking in 2007, finding a weight loss program that worked was a challenge. “I’d lose 60 pounds in a summer, gain it all back. Seventy pounds, 80 pounds. And that got tiring,” he told the outlet. “I took steps so I wouldn’t have to do that anymore. I was almost 400 pounds,” he added, noting that his relationship with food was also complicated. “I was eating alcoholically after I stopped drinking.”

The Digger star, who previously shared that he hit his highest weight of 400 lbs. in 2011, said that his drinking “sustained” his “immaturity” — which he says contributed to his jovial onscreen persona at the time. It was a persona he was ready to lose because at that point, he says his life was on the line.

“If I did [think about losing the ‘happy guy’ onscreen persona], it was a secondary thought, because I was saving my life at that point,” the Righteous Gemstones star said, sharing he was ready to do “whatever it took to stay sober.”

But the actor was reflective about how drinking, and eating, are connected: “The thing about instant gratification is you don’t really care what’s going to happen right after it — which always led to bigger hangovers or me getting the shakes, and having to drink to get rid of the shakes, and that vicious cycle,” he explained.

“I was in a position, when I quit, where I had to be hospitalized one way or the other. I just was tired of it, and I wanted to stop. I was delaying my maturation by drinking, and I had a lot of catching up to do, just realizing how selfish it made me,” Goodman said. “I was overlooking real life. And it was great to see there was a life where I didn’t have to use anything to enjoy it.”

Goodman is now focused on low-impact fitness after fracturing his hip last year during an on-set injury that he’s previously said sidelined him for two months. As he told The New Yorker, since then he’s been working on “building up the core, balance, strength training, stuff like that, so I don’t fall down.”

“There’s been a lot of therapy. I’m happy now. I just wish I was better spoken and I could relax more,” he said. “The best stuff happens when I’m relaxed.”
